I was never a morning person, I struggled to get out of bed in the morning and found myself constantly struggling to find more hours in the day. This led me onto a path of serious information overload as I battled through each day trying to complete all the tasks I had in front of me. The end result?…Burnout, Stress & Anxiety!
I knew something had to change. I needed to address the pace at which I was trying to do things and streamline my business so that I was only focusing on the important tasks needed to complete my goals. To do this, I needed to find more TIME!
I knew where I could find more time, so I dedicated myself to conditioning my body and mind to wake up early and get productive, clear the mind and set myself up for each day on a clear path.
I picked up a copy of The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod and started to condition myself to wake up early. Within two weeks I was more productive than I had been for a long time, I was waking up 2 hours earlier each day and using the first hour to relax in silence before my partner woke up. I would use this time to read, write down blog & business ideas and plan for the day ahead. I was feeling less stressed as I now had time to plan properly for the day ahead, breaking down the work into manageable chunks which could be realistically achieved with the time I had left.
After a few weeks of forcing myself to get up early, my body begin to naturally wake up before my alarm clock and although I was waking up 2 hours earlier, I had lots more energy to burn. Having those extra few hours has helped me relax and properly plan ahead. I now love my morning routine and it has become a vital component for growing my business.
Having a morning routine is a great idea because it makes it a lot easier to start the day on the right foot. If you find yourself often waking up late, procrastinating by hitting snooze and then rushing out of the door with one sock on, you’ll know just how destructive this can be to your productivity later on.
Likewise, the morning is a block of time that will almost always be free from interruption, which makes it ideal for planning, relaxing and scribing ideas. Even if the rest of your day is a bust you can rest assured that you accomplished some positive actions in the morning which are leading you on the right path towards your goals.
The importance of an evening routine is to help bookend the day and also to ensure that your morning routine has the best chance of being carried out well. If you set yourself up in the evening, then you’ll make it considerably easier to follow through with your plans in the morning.
Let’s take a look at some examples of things you can add to each routine for your inspiration…
The Morning Routine
Eating a healthy breakfast is crucial to start your day off well. Keep a consistent menu and you can automate your morning process and ensure that you have fuelled yourself with complex carbs and all the nutrients that you need to function at your best.
If you can exercise at the start of the day, then you’ll begin your day with more energy and enthusiasm and you can ensure that you’ll have burned at least a few calories before you begin. Even if you just do a few press ups and pull ups, this can make a big difference!
I find the first few hours in the morning are when I can concentrate on blog writing. I find myself at my most creative in the morning time.
Finding 30 minutes a day to read is a great idea, knowledge is power and I now find time to read for at least 30 minutes each day. Check out my recommended reading here.
Making a To-Do List
Why not set out your goals for the day right at the start?
The Evening Routine
Lay Out Clothes
Save yourself time tomorrow by laying yourself out clothes.
Be grateful for the day you have just had, even if it was a bad one! If you’ve got a bed to sleep in, a roof over your head and food in the fridge when you wake up in the morning then you’re far luckier than a huge portion of the world’s population. Try and put your troubles & thoughts into perspective. We live on a tiny ball of rock in a vast cosmos that amazingly has all the ingredients to support life. Our tiny Earth is the only planet we know from billions of galaxies that are capable of supporting life. You are extremely lucky to be alive. Be grateful for this gift.
I used to sit in bed at night and look through my phone, catch up on my Twitter, Facebook, and other media items. THIS WAS A TERRIBLE MISTAKE. Put your phone down at least 30 minutes before bed and don’t be distracted by useless media. Switch off from digital distractions before bed and you will sleep far better.
It may seem like a crazy idea to wake up earlier when you are tired and struggling to fight through each day, but once your body is conditioned to getting up a few hours earlier you will become more productive, have more energy and by far more creative.
Use the time to concentrate on growing your business, in silence, away from mobile phones, TV, and other distracting digital items. It’s a time to gather your thoughts and plan ahead. Use this time wisely!
